Like if they singers voice is way off beat they sound awful when singing
You could be 'way off' other things. For example, "We're lost. We're way off track." You can use this more metaphorically to suggest someone has got the wrong idea. "He thought I loved him but he was way off track there! Didn't like him at all!"
'Way' in this sense means something like 'very' or perhaps 'completely.'
The construction is similar to a 1st conditional. IF you are way off beat, they WILL have to work hard to understand you.
