Mr.A:eki wa doko desu ka (where is the station?)
Mr.B:wakarimasen
Mr.A:eki wa doko desu ka (where is the station?)
Mr.C:shirimasen
In this case Mr.B thought where is the station. But he couldn't answer.So, he said "wakarimasen". Mr.C didn't think about it. just he doesn't have information about the station. So, he said "shirimasen".
If you answer "shirimasen", usually native people feel you are cold.

wakarimasen and wakannai are same meanings.
wakarimasen is formal. and wakannai is casual.
when your friend asked something, if you don't know you can say wakannai.
