I'm not sure about the US structure, but in the UK you go to primary school from about 5 years old and you go to secondary school at 11. Most people move onto a college or Sixth Form Prep at 16, and then University if you're going from 18 onwards. Secondary school students have their time there broken into three main parts, being the initial base learning, study towards their chosen fields for their exams in the last two years and then the actual exam period. Once you've got those exams (GCSES) the grade achieved determines what college or SIxth form you'll attend for the next set of examinations or coursework. And the process repeats again there to decide which University you'll get accepted to! :)
