I think because they used bamboo stick to write at ancient time. After the invention of paper, it already became a habit.

In Japanese, there are things to read from the top to the bottom, but in modern times, there is no way to do so from right to left. This vertical writing culture exists around the world. To know why this has happened, I can not answer because I have not to know why people of ancient times did. But, what I can tell you clearly that most Japanese people are writing almost horizontally (from left to right). It is the same as English.
