Persuade is when you cause someone to do an action because of what you say
Convince is when something (person or object) causes you to believe in the validity of something.
Example 1. I persuaded my friend to set off fireworks with me on the 4th of July even though it was illegal.
Example 2. The heavy wind and high waves convinced me that I didn't want to swim to the island on Sunday.
