@xinhua: encantado es cuando te agrado la persona que te presentaron por ejemplo Encantado de conocerte en cambio mucho gusto es sólo para formalizar un saludo como una forma de responder así Mucho gusto de conocerte :D

cuando presentan a alguien en una reunión trabajo de amigos o familiares se utiliza el Encantado de Conocerlo. si es entre desconocidos Mucho guste Sra. o Sr.

En Colombia es poco usual decir "encantado" a lo hora de conocer a alguien pero "encantado" y "mucho gusto" significarían lo mismo.

encantado, se usa cuando uno se encuentra muy contento o muy a gusto de cierta manera a una cierta cosa o persona y mucho gusto se usa en presentación una forma de saludar con respeto .

No hay mucha diferencia, son básicamente la misma cosa.
—Encantado (de conocerte) quiere decir literalmente que es te estas deslumbrando de conocer a alguien.
—Mucho gusto (de conocerte) que es un gusto / te ha gustado mucho conocer a tal persona
En contraste con algunas expresiones en inglés

@xinhua: cuando te presentan a alguien, la persona te da su nombre, tú le estrechas la mano y dices: "mucho gusto, mi nombre es....". En España es muy usual en ese mismo caso decir: "encantado". En mi país, Colombia "estar encantado" es expresar que algo o alguien te causa mucho gusto y placer. Ejemplo: "encantado de conocerte", "estoy encantado de vivir en esta ciudad".
