Учить - давать знания, получать знания.
Я учу иностранный язык. (получать знания)
Мой друг учит меня иностранному языку. (давать знания (мой друг даёт мне знания))

This "ся" at the end usually projects the action on the speaker. So "мыть" — to wash, to clean; мыться — to take bath or shower.

That means that if a person asks us What are you doing? - Что вы делаете? - We may answer either -
1) Я учусь. or 2) a. Я учу русский. (and it would be necessary to say something after "учу", as this verb is transitive) if we use it in the sense that you learn something.
b. and to answer "Я учу его русском." or "Я учу его." in the sense "I teach him".

Firstly, учить can mean “to teach” and it’s better to use it this way. «Учить в школе» means that you teach someone in a school. You can use it as “to learn something” but you have to specify what you’re gonna learn: Учить стих (learn a poem). «Учить стих в школе» means to learn a poem while being in school. «Учиться» means to study for some time, it doesn’t require an object. «Учиться в школе» means “to study in school”. «Учиться плавать» - learn how to swim.
