it's just an expression, so there's not really an explanation. there are a few expressions like this
gå til sengs - to go to bed to get ready to sleep
gå til sengen - walk to the bed (without sleeping, just the activity of walking in that direction)
another expression is:
sett deg til bords - go sit at the table to get ready to eat
sett deg ved bordet - go sit at the table (not necessarily for eating)
