A hard one indeed.
You can literally translate it to "sacar" as in "¿Qué pudiste sacar de la historia?" (what could you take out of the story) but I think there are better options like "¿Qué te dejó la historia?" (what [message] did the story give to you?) o "¿Qué aprendiste de la historia?" (what did you learn from the story?)
