Wow I live in Nancy 😂. Both are pretty small cities, and I’m often bored here. So what is your question about ? (Studies? Fun? People?)

If you mean for visiting, Nancy is definitely more touristic. But Metz is not so bad either ^^

I'm at University in Metz and I can tell that it's a very beautiful city! There are also good restaurants there 😉 Nancy seems to be great too 😊

The old town of Nancy with his Place Stanislas ! quite and beautiful city and Metz is nice too.

If it's only to visit and you have time only for one, go for Nancy.
If you can spare a bit of time, you can take a train to Metz for the day, it's also nice (but a bit less, imho :) )
