The connection is weak, but in old English the word just meant "hard part of". A fingernail is the hard part of the finger. A construction nail is the hard part of a piece of wood."
That said, this is so tenuous that a fake connection works better. When you get bored and daydream, your nails hammer against the table like a construction nail against wood.
