'Many' and 'many of' means the same. It is only differently use for sentence structure.
'Many' is broad and so it does not refer to anything specifically.
'Many of' is more specific and so it requires a continuation of more words for it to make sense.
To make it easier for you to understand, 'Many' is similar to 'a' and 'Many of' is similar to 'the'.
For example 'a cat' - you can be referring to ANY cat.
Different, 'the cat' - you are talking about a SPECIFIC cat. E.g. You own a cat and you are at home. You say 'where is the cat?' Because you are referring specifically your cat.
This is the same with 'many' and 'many of'. Many - you can be referring to anything.
Many of - you are referring to a particular thing.
Examples of 'many' and 'many of' is:
Many cats sit on the fence.
Many of the cats sit on the fence.
Hope I did not confuse you. Good luck.
