"Look in the dictionary" feels like it's only used as a command, to me.
"Hey, how do you spell this word?"
"I don't know. Go look in the dictionary."
On the other hand, I say "I need to look that up in the dictionary." And other variations of this phrasing constantly. I think this is more common.

the secong phrase would be "look it up in the dictionary", you can use both and be understood
