so it's Ok to say just "my friend" in an actual conversation,
because, here they teach it has to be "a friend of mine" from my home town,...
Guess native people actually don't talk like that, do they?

it's fine to say a "friend of mine from my hometown" or "a hometown friend of mine" but it's just faster to say "my friend"and therefore it's most likely going to be used more often.
