El área es una medida de la extensión de una superficie, expresada en unidades de medida de superficie (centímetros, metros, kilómetros).
Zona es una extensión de terreno cuyos límites están determinados por razones administrativas, políticas, etc
Ejemplos:
El área de trabajo mide 6 metros.
La zona de trabajo va desde la entrada principal hasta el estacionamiento.
Aunque son usadas ambas con el mismo significado pues la diferencia es muy sutil. Saludos
