Sono coniugazioni del verbo essere, ero/sono stato ( maschile ) ero/sono stata ( femminile )
Es: non ero “ mai “ stato/stata in Italia.
Spesso il trapassato prossimo è accompagnato da avverbi di tempo come: mai, prima, ancora, sempre, ecc.
Es2: oggi sono stato/stata a pranzo dai miei genitori.

Ero è più usato per indicare una cosa lunga nel tempo:" Un tempo ero un architetto", o anche "Ero al bar l'altra sera". Anche sono stato può essere usato in questo senso ma spesso intende qualcosa di più corto. Sono però solo piccole sfumature, difficilissime da notare.
