It means stop yourself from doing something.
For example -
I love to eat food! My doctor tells me that I need to hold myself back otherwise I will get fat!
Give it everything that you have got! You have to win the race! Don't hold yourself back!
Whenever you lie and steal you hold yourself back. No body respects a liar!
