What do you call it in english?
The sentences in a book that buddhists recite. In weblio dictionary, it's "buddhist sutra", but my friend doesn't know the word. Isn't there more a common word?

"Sutra" is an acceptable term if you're referring to Buddhism in particular. The generic term for things from a holy book like a Bible or Koran would be a "Verse" for a particular section of text.

"Sutra" is correct. Your friend is simply not very knowledgeable about Buddhism (like most people).
