It depends. An experience in a city and another in a small town are unique in their own ways. However, small towns and rural areas are known for having less diversity/smaller amounts of foreigners and recent immigrants.

Can I feel true American culture in NYC? (Because NYC has so many different types of people from around the world) Or is a small city a better choice to feel true American culture? --
This sounds a little bit more natural.
-- in my opinion all of the cultures coming together is a great part of what makes America. However going to smaller city's or towns are also good too to see.
