The name of the language is actually Bahasa Melayu/Malay Language (language of the ethnic Malays). The Malay language was chosen as the common language to unite the Indonesians in early 1920s (Indonesia being ethnically diversed and has tonnes of different languages so they need one national language that everyone should be able to speak). They named it then as Bahasa Indonesia.
There are some differences in the vocabulary, intonation etc between Indonesian and Malaysian, or even within the same country itself as there are many different dialects of the speakers of this language. But in general they are able to understand each other.
