Question about Brazil
Why do Brazilians get mad when an outsider call them “Latinos” like do they know what’s a Latino mean? Because I was talking with a group of Brazilian people and somehow I said “Latinos” and they said “No! We aren’t Latinos but just Brazilians” I was confused for a moment..

Since we speak a different language and we had really different influences in the construction of our culture and history, we don't identify ourselves as "latinos".

The definition of Latino means someone who speak a language coming from Latin root such as Portuguese.. that’s why it’s not wrong at all it’s like calling Germanic someone who speak English which is right tho so it doesn’t make sense at all, Hispanics or francophones can also be called Latino it’s not that they identify themselves it’s how History paint it. I’m a Linguist after all. Nice to meet you.

I also study philology and literature. The point here is more cultural than linguistic. When someone talk about Brazilian culture, it involves more than native culture or European culture, we had so many different influences (from almost all above the globe) that it's difficult to tell what is the identity of Brazilian culture. So historically you can say Brazilians are latinos, but it will be hard to see a Brazilian calling himself this way because we see our cultural and historical identity quite unique in compare to others.

I know the culture is unique as any other country with slavery and conquers influences and indigenous but I’m talking about linguistically of course because they’re going to still being Brazilians as long as they identify themselves that way obviously but other than that I ain’t talking about pride or patriotism for a land built. Sadly to say in Brazil are dying 97 indigenous languages and Portuguese is the most spoken one so it’s an example how conquerors let their own pride for something you know as long as I can see and study

Complementing the answers, Brazil is the only country in Latin America that does not have Spanish as a native language, and another fact that annoys Brazilians a lot is when some foreigner - usually an American - say that in Brazil speaks Spanish, they say that capital is Buenos Aires ... anyway, it is a shallow interjection of a country that despite being considered underdeveloped, but is very important for the world. We Brazilians and Brazil are much more than the label of samba, soccer, Rio de Janeiro and beautiful women. The other nations should know much more about Brazil. You build metal superalloy equipment made with the Brazilian Niobium (we have 97.5% of world reserves), you develop specific medicines and cosmetics with raw materials that only exist in the Brazilian Amazon, you fight the best jiu-jitsu in the world that was created in the Brazil, you can only exploit oil in deep waters because the world's leading technology is developed by Brazilians, you move in vehicles, generate energy and use powered machines, all powered by ethanol that was invented in Brazil, you fly in airplanes because they were invented by a Brazilian (Santos Dumont) who had the idea usurped by the Wright brothers and took the credit, the best armies in the world send their soldiers to Brazil to learn combat techniques in natural hostile environments with the best soldiers in the world: Brazilians, in the same way, the urban combat in areas of rugged relief and without organized infrastructure, whose s techniques are creations of elite police officers in Brazil. I could type all night long about the references that Brazil offers to the world, but I believe that these are enough, so i belive that we can receive a worthy recognition.

@tamarindo I don't know why they get mad at it lol
I always think about being Latino someone who speaks a language that came from Latin (even French ppl, even tho they probably won't identify themselves as Latino bc "they are in Europe not Latin America")
also I haven't seen Brazilians getting mad at being called as Latinos (ofc when it's not in a racist/bad context), but I've seen ppl from other Latino countries besides Brazil saying we are not Latinos bc we don't speak Spanish and we weren't colonized by Spain
Btw about the word gringo, in Brazil gringo it's not only for ppl from the U.S. we use this word for every foreing and I was so shocked when I called my Mexican friend by gringa and she was like omgg no I'm Mexican, not gringa hahahahah

This definition of Latinos was created by Americans to refer to Latin American immigrants in their country, since the vast majority of those immigrants are from Hispanic countries, all the Latino things are in fact Hispanic, even though Brazil is one third of Latin America, so it's normal for Brazilians to not feel indenfied by this definition.

Hi! I'm Brazilian and I feel pretty fine with being called as "Latin American" I'm proud of it actually. I present myself as Brazilian to be more specific but I'm really fine with it. In my opinion one of the reasons why Latin Americans (probably not just Brazilians) might not be so comfortable for being called like that is because people from many other countries have used this expression to express the exoticism they relate to Latin America. I think this way because "have you ever noticed how many movies which the villain characters are Latin Americans?" There are so many! When it happens in the movies it's related to crime, drugs, poverty and sex most of the times... I'm not sure but I guess people from Africa must feel more comfortable for being related to their nationality like Egyptian or Tunisian instead of African for instance... Also when it comes to Europeans, it's more common to hear they saying things like "I'm French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian..." instead of "I'm Latin or I'm European Latin..." Even though the definition "Latin American" were created by the own conquers who founded America, it was over 500 years ago and nowadays this definition has been increased with many other meanings we might not like. I mean... it doesn't mean "The new world" anymore. That's just my opinion, I can't represent over 200 million people's thoughts hahah. But as I said, I'm ok with being Latin American =]

For me, you being a Brazilian and don't considerate yourself Latino is denying your cultural identity! I am Brazilian and yes, I am Latina!
Although some people think it may be offensive (by how people from US usually talk about Latin America), I feel sometimes that some Brazilian don't want to be compared to the rest of America Latina, which is stupid, because we have more things in common than we know!

I get really sad about it because most people in Brazil don't consider themselves as latinos. I think that happens because we speak portuguese, not spanish like others countries in Latin America. For me, I love being a latina, it's part of who I am.
