"yo soy" and "yo estoy" has a same meaning in English, which is "i am" or, simply, "i'm". When you talking "i am", there are two possibilities: indicate estate, or indicate existence. But, in Spanish (and Portuguese too), there are two sentences for indicate those expressions, which are the ones you mentioned. Bye :)
