Question about Japanese
How often do people have to write out kanji?
I’ve heard that less and less people living in Japan, have to write out kanji, because your able to easily do it digitally.
Does this mean I should only learn how to write out the more common kanji, and only learn harder/unusual kanji, but without attempting to write it?

Yeah, I understand your point. But I believe that students still learn them at school and practice writing them, but at work, yes we have few chances to write out kanji except when we leave memos for our coworkers. We don’t use unusual kanji there, and even if we have to use difficult kanji in our reports, we normally use our PC. So yeah I think more and more people can’t write out kanji even though they learn them at school.

That makes a lot of sense! Thank you @Hiroshi212 so much. I was making the decision on how I should learn kanji.

@VelvetC
Yeah but if you have room to learn difficult ones as well, that is the best of all. :)

But if you are thinking of working at a Japanese related job, you should at least learn difficult ones too. Because it’s meaningless if you don’t know which options of kanji you should use even if you can use PC.

So what would you recommend for a song writer or a mangaka?

Sorry, for a person who draws manga. In the job, I realize you have the choice to either make translations yourself from Japanese to English, or you can have somebody else do it. (I usually like to do things on my own though.)

Do you think I’d need some good kanji writing and reading skills for that?
- Japanese
@VelvetC
Ahhh, in the case of mangaka, i think they write lines in bubbles themselves (I’m one of those who aimed to be a mangaka), or they print them after writing on PC. In any case, it’s better to learn commonly used kanji even if you don’t write them out. Otherwise, you wouldn’t know which options you should use when many combinations of kanji pop up on PC as options.
