A little unnatural
Dental hygienistはちょっと変だと思います。日本語は「歯医者」で、英語は「dentist」でしょう(・・?)
- Japanese
日本語では、歯科衛生士、のつもりでした。
Dentists don't usually do this kind of plaque-cleaning job themselves, not in Japan at least.
Aren't there hygienists, or such qualified assistants, in dental cliniques in America?
Does simple 'hygienists' make more sense?

Hygienist does make sense, but I have never heard of them in Australia. What you previously described, 'checking the gums for cavities' is what my dentist would do for me in Australia. However, I think if you are referring to them, saying dentist hygienist would be better than just hygienist (^^)

I see, thanks a lot!
