Legit is a slang term, which is short for the word legitimate. It basically mean that someone or something is credible or cool. It sounds like the people you are talking to are using it incorrectly.

Legit has two meanings that i know of. One of the meanings would be the expression of being overwhelmed by something or by an event one is experiencing and another being "authenticity".

it's a slang replacement for Legitimate or Legitimately. "legitimately the best" becomes "legit the best" and "you're legitimate" becomes "you're legit". When used this way, it either emphasizes the coolness/awesomeness of something ("you're legit") or it emphasizes the seriousness of the expression ("the legit best moment of my life")

Just be aware that using this slang can make you seem uneducated, as it's typically used by stereotypical dude/bro types of people (not saying that I agree, just a word of warning)
